October Midstate Messenger: Cybersecurity Tips, Co-op Month & More

The October 2026 edition of the Midstate Messenger is here, featuring helpful cybersecurity reminders, cooperative news and updates from around Midstate.October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and scammers are getting better at making emails, text messages and websites look legitimate. Clean spelling, familiar logos and professional wording no longer guarantee that a message is safe. If a request seems unusual, unexpected or overly urgent, pause before clicking a link, scanning a QR code or sharing personal information.
A few simple habits can make a big difference. Carefully check the sender’s email address, use strong and unique passwords, turn on multi-factor authentication whenever it is available and keep your devices updated. If you are unsure about a request, close the message or hang up and contact the person or business using a phone number you already know and trust.
October is also National Co-op Month, making it a great time to celebrate what sets Midstate Communications apart. Midstate is local, accountable to its members and focused on the long-term needs of the communities we serve. Our cooperative was created 74 years ago to bring telephone service to rural homes other companies had passed over. Today, fiber internet continues that same mission by keeping rural South Dakota connected with decisions made close to home.
Sports and fine arts fans can tune in to Midstate TV Channel 243 for upcoming South Dakota high school events. October programming includes State Soccer on October 17, State Cheer and Dance on October 23 and 24, and All-State Chorus and Orchestra on October 31.
This month’s newsletter also offers a look at the recent improvements to Midstate’s Chamberlain office. New exterior signage, updated window graphics and an illuminated sign give the building a fresh appearance while highlighting the many services available from your local Midstate team.
You’ll also see how Midstate employees stepped away from their desks for an FRS 5K Walk through Kimball. The walk was part of Midstate’s employee wellness program and provided an enjoyable evening of exercise, fresh air and time together.
