Sun Spots May Affect TV Service October 7–11
– By #Midstate IT Team
If your TV picture suddenly freezes, becomes blocky, or disappears for a few minutes between October 7 and October 11, the sun may be to blame!
Twice a year, in the spring and fall, a natural event called sun interference, often referred to as "sun spots," can temporarily affect television service across the United States—not just here in South Dakota. TV providers nationwide experience this same phenomenon, and there's nothing wrong with your TV or equipment.
What Causes Sun Interference?
Many television channels are delivered using satellites orbiting high above Earth. At certain times of the year, the sun lines up directly behind these satellites for a short period.
When this happens, energy from the sun interferes with the satellite signals that bring television programming to your home.
Think of it like trying to hear someone talking while a loud radio is playing nearby. The person is still talking, but the background noise makes it difficult to hear them clearly. Sun interference works in much the same way.
Does This Happen Everywhere?
Yes! Sun interference affects satellite communications throughout the United States and other parts of the world.
Because the sun's position changes depending on where you live, the exact dates and times of these interruptions vary across the country. October 7–11 is the expected window for our area.
This is a normal seasonal occurrence that affects TV providers nationwide, not an issue specific to Midstate Communications.
What Might You Notice?
During this time, you may experience:
-
A frozen or blocky TV picture
-
Brief interruptions in sound
-
Certain channels temporarily going black
-
A complete loss of picture for a few minutes
Not every channel or customer will be affected. Interruptions generally last only a few minutes while the sun is directly behind the satellite.
Do You Need to Do Anything?
No! Your TV service should return on its own once the sun moves out of alignment.
There's no need to reset your TV equipment, adjust your settings, or schedule a service call for these brief interruptions.
We appreciate your patience during this natural occurrence. If your TV service does not return after a brief interruption, please contact Midstate Communications by phone or text at 605-778-6221.
